The Digging Stick
The history of The Digging Stick extends back to 1978, when Janette Deacon started a newsletter to cater for all members of the South African Archaeological Society. This was called the South African Archaeological Newsletter. It published articles and archaeological news in a brief and popular format and aimed to make archaeological research findings easily accessible to all.
Oliver Davies edited the Newsletter for several years. It was renamed The Digging Stick in 1984, when Shirley-Ann Pager was appointed editor. Margaret Avery followed as editor, then David Morris. Reinoud Boers took over as editor in 2002 and has increased the size and quality of The Digging Stick through partnerships with commercial advertisers and sponsors.
The Digging Stick remains the Society’s popular magazine. It features shorter articles on archaeological developments and research in southern Africa, and news briefs on advances in archaeology in South Africa, Africa and around the world. It publishes letters, notices and anything else of interest relating to archaeology.
The Digging Stick is published three times a year, in April, August and December, and is received free by members of the society.
Submissions of articles of not more than 2 500 words or shorter notes are welcome. Where possible, articles should be accompanied by relevant illustrations
