The annual ONE DAY LECTURE SERIES of the Archaeological Society of the Western Cape and the Friends of the Stellenbosch Museum is entitled: "CLIMATE CHANGE ........Is your beach house 10 metres above mean sea level?" The speakers are:
JANETTE DEACON
"Milutin Milankovitch and the Astronomical Theory of the Ice Ages"
In 1920, Milankovitch, a Serbian mathematician, published an article in which he argued that it was possible to calculate the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth at any time in the past 1 million years or more .
JUDITH SEALY
"How archaeology can help us understand climates at the most southern tip of Africa: new results and work in progress"
Archaeology and climate research might sound like unlikely bedfellows, but there is in fact a great deal of work in progress on this topic.
LYNNE QUICK
"Late Quaternary vegetation and climate change on the southern Cape coast"
The southern Cape coast is a key focus area for southern Africa palaeoenviromental research as it presents the transitional region from southern Africa's winter rainfall zone to the year-round zone.
HAYLEY CAWTHRAW
"Sea-level fluctuations, submerged landscapes and the implications for our early ancestors: case studies from the South African south- and east coasts."
The South African continental shelf and adjacent low-relief coastal plain comprise the submerged and emergent portions of a continuous feature, with the degree of separation being dependent upon the relative sea level at any given time.
BOSCHENDAL
This year's outing takes us via spectacular alpine scenery to Bossendaal (granted 1690), an equally impressive Boland homestead and farmyard lovingly restored to its former glory by Gawie and Gwen Fagan.
