Pat Kramer: “Corbelled buildings of the Great Karoo: the variety of their form and how they were used.”

Corbelled buildings were built during the 19th century over a period of about 50 years in a defined area of the Karoo. Pat Kramer and a small group of colleagues have criss-crossed the Karoo over the past eight years and have located close to two hundred of these structures. Careful study of each building has revealed significant variety in their forms. Although they were all constructed for the use of small stock pastoralists, the buildings had to fulfil specific functions on the farms. The availability of such a large sample reveals patterns of use and reuse.
