About the Outing
Join us for an unforgetable experience in the Waterberg as Professor Lyn Wadley guides us through some of the spectacular rock art sites that have recently been published in her book, Rock Art of the Waterberg: Rites and Transformations. The archaeology of the Waterberg spans the full spectrum of hominin evolution: from the massive Acheuleun stone flakes at Welgevonden, through the Middle Stone Age sequence at Red Balloon Rock Shelter, to the incredibly rich Later Stone Age material culture at Kaingo Sheep Rock Shelter (currently under active excavation by Lyn and her team); the Waterberg has it all.

The rock paintings bear testament to the presence of three diverse groups of inhabitants and illuminate some of the profound themes of the human experience, including initation, healing, spiritual transformation, interaction and co-existence. This tour will offer participants a unique insight into this forgotten world and fragile archive of early South African creativity. Participants will stay at the research centre in the beautiful Kaingo Game Reserve, which also serves as the base of operations for the excavations. Participants will be chauffeured by game vehicle to the different sites and be treated to a behind-the-scenes experience of the rock art and archaeology of the Waterberg with one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject.

Programme:
Friday 19 June
Travel independently to Kaingo Game Reserve via Vaalwater (directions will be provided to participants). Participants should leave home early enough to ensure that they arrive at the
parking facility no later than 5 pm.
Prof. Lyn Wadley will give an introductory talk at 7 pm followed by a presentation from Dr Nico Lubcker, Kaingo’s head of research.
A braai dinner will be served.

Saturday 20 June
Breakfast at Kaingo research centre.
Participants will be taken by game vehicle to see various sites.

Sunday 21 June
After breakfast we will be taken to collect our vehicles. We will then drive in convoy to a nearby herder rock art site. The site is half-way between the Waterberg and Vaalwater, which will be on the way home for most participants.
