Henry Charles (Jatti) Bredekamp 1945-2023
The South African Archaeological Society is saddened to record the passing of historian Henry Charles Bredekamp, widely known as Jatti, on 20 September 2023 at the age of 78. He was born in Genadendal in the Western Cape and after teaching at a farm school near Leeu Gamka he became a university student and was awarded two Masters degrees.  One as a Fulbright scholar at Wesleyan University in the USA and the other at the University of the Western Cape. In 1976 he was appointed as a lecturer at UWC, and in the 1990s became director of the Institute for Historical Research. He had a particular interest in human rights as they related to the history and identity of the Khoekhoe and San, slavery and mission stations in the Western Cape. In 1997 he was the chairman of the organising committee for the Khoisan Identities and Cultural Heritage conference in Cape Town. It was the first multicultural event of its kind that brought together scholars from across the world and Khoekhoe and San descendants from both rural and urban communities. After leaving UWC he became CEO of the Iziko Museums in Cape Town and was for a time interim CEO of Robben Island Museum, a member of the SAHRA Council and the President of the South African National Committee of ICOM (the International Committee on Museums). He will be greatly missed.
