The James Hall museum of transport is the largest museum of this type in Africa and is one of the stops on the Joburg’s sight-seeing red bus tour. The museum has a permanent display of various types of transport vehicles dating back to animal-drawn transport like the iconic ox wagon to penny farthings, bicycles, rickshaws, motorbikes, horse-drawn and electric trams, steam engines and other vehicles. Also included is one of the Zeederberg Mail Coaches. The highlight of our tour will be the steam-powered bus that the museum staff are planning to get running on the day.

James Smith is a transport enthusiast and has spent many hours tinkering with various engines including steam engines. He is passionate about the restoration of old vehicles and he will explain the history of many of the pieces found in the museum. He will explain the challenges involved in maintaining this aspect of our heritage.
