In praise of diffusion: Diffusion of Innovation theory and South African archaeology.
‘Diffusion of Innovation’ refers to a theory that seeks to explain how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technologies spread through social systems; in this way it helps to explain social change. The theory was developed by Everett Rogers in 1962 and it does not come from archaeology or anthropology, but from communication studies and related social sciences. Nevertheless, it is clearly relevant and potentially can provide not only a fresh perspective on the interpretation of archaeological and historical data, but also can shed some light on the future of archaeology in South Africa.
