About the Outing:
Jubilee Rock Shelter is one of the richest archaeological sites in the Magaliesberg. Excavated in the 1980s by Professor Lyn Wadley and her students, the site provided critical evidence about the seasonal aggregation and dispersal habits of hunter-gatherers during the later Holocene. The archaeological material excavated at the site still forms part of student research projects. Jubilee Rock Shelter also contains an unexcavated Middle Stone Age deposit.

About the Tour Guide:
Prof Bradfield is Associate Professor of archaeology at the Palaeo-Research Institute, University of Johannesburg. He explores the taxonomic identification of pervasively modified bone tools: using two techniques (collagen biomarkers and CT-rendered bone histology). He is also investigating ways of non-destructively identifying which mammal taxa people were targeting for tool manufacture and the extent to which this representation might differ over time. Other research areas include investigating biochemical characterisation of poison residues on Stone Age hunting kits and in this way he aims to explore the antiquity and variability of indigenous knowledge systems by looking at the plant ingredients used to make poison weapons.
