With significant advances in marine geophysical mapping methods in recent years, geologists are able to use sophisticated technology to map the seafloor at a resolution – with certain instruments – to within a decimetre. Hayley Cawthra (Council for Geoscience and Nelson Mandela University) present data from various parts of the Western and Eastern Cape seafloor with a specific focus on the Palaeo-Agulhas Plain, which is a submerged terrestrial ecosystem now drowned by high sea levels. The presentation draws links between disciplines of geophysics, geology, archaeology and palaeoclimatology, towards unravelling aspects of Pleistocene global change.
