TUESDAY 12 JUNE: 18:00 for 18:30 at the SA Astronomical Observatory auditorium: Jaco Boshoff: “History and archaeology of the slave vessel São José Paquete d’Afrique wrecked off Clifton, Cape Town”.
This presentation will tell the story of the wrecking of the São José Paquete d’Afrique. This relatively unknown shipwreck was found in the early 1980’s in Clifton and misidentified. Later the wreck became a target for the international Slave Wrecks Project. Rigorous examination of the artefacts found on the site as well as archival documentation clearly identified the wreck in Clifton as the São José Paquete d’Afrique. The presentation will discuss these finds as well as the state of the project. This includes the new directions the research into the wreck site is taking as well as contextualizing the wreck in modern South Africa.
