The tour will include the historical Jewish precinct where a number of Johannesburg's leading Jewish citizens are buried including Wolf Joel, nephew of Barney Barnato, who was shot and killed by Kurt von Veltheim under mysterious ircumstances. Other historical graves include a passenger who drowned on the Titanic, Johannesburg's first recipient of the Victoria Cross, the sister-in-law of Lord Kitchener, the Foster Gang, the coachman of President Kruger, the Police and Firemen's section and a monument to those who died in the Dynamite explosion of 19 February 1896. The Garden of Remembrance to Imperial soldiers of the Boer War will visited along with the grave of Enoch Sontonga, composer of Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. Where applicable, tombstone symbolism will also be discussed.

Sarah Welham is a researcher for Johannesburg Heritage and recently formed the Friends of the Cemetery. Her knowledge of the Braamfontein and Brixton Cemeteries is unparalleled.
