Filling in the blanks: three painted panels from Upper Cingati

In 2003 Meridy Pfotenhauer recorded a small painted rock shelter in the upper eBusingatha Valley, northern KZN Drakensberg. She saw that one of the walls had been vandalized – it was covered with chisel marks framing three rectangular patches. In my research on the larger and more famous site of eBusingatha (uMhwabane) in archives on two continents, I caught a few glimpses of what the small shelter used to look like. This ultimately led me to link this rock shelter with three unprovenanced panels in the collections the Old Court House Museum in Durban. Through digital imaging it possible to visualize something of the earlier painted world of the rock shelter.

The three actual pieces will be on display at this talk.
