The recording of oral narratives and a stubborn search for rock art in the Upington area, Northern Cape led to a twenty-year collaboration with Kalahari people, academics and the Upington and McGregor Museums. This talk and related visuals, highlights the culture centred participatory communication for development approach included in the recording and dissemination of both the engravings and oral narratives. The dissemination includes publications of Kalahari people’s art and oral narratives, museum applied storytelling, as well as a joint publication by Kalahari community participants, academics of various disciplines including archaeology, landscape architecture and communication. It introduces the rock engravings of Biesje Poort farm and the debated assignation of prehistoric authorship and contested links thereto of present day KhoeSan communities. It further highlights the use of local Water Snake narratives for the interpretation of specific engravings at the site.
